This lecture will discuss the historical context of the founding of An Garda Síochána, its role in the foundation of the State and its early history up to modern times, finishing with a brief segment on the modern force and where it goes from here. It will present the history of An Garda Síochána “warts and all”.

Tom Daly is a Garda with 29 years’ service, in Dublin, the border counties, Waterford and Cork. He has been writing articles on the history of An Garda Síochána for the Garda Review for a number of years.
